Talent Development & Career Exploration Legislation Introduced

Senate Bill 684 (Senator Ken Horn, R-Frankenmuth) and Senate Bill 685 (Senator Peter MacGregor, R-Rockford) would require schools to help students create a talent portfolio to document the tangible and marketable career skills. The portfolio will be revised throughout the implementation of a student’s educational development.

“The talent gap is a clear barrier to growth in Michigan and solutions to these challenges will create opportunities for our next generation to prosper right here in Michigan,” says Delaney McKinley, MMA senior director of government affairs and membership. “Developing the talent pipeline is the key to our state’s success and Senate Bills 684-685 will afford students more opportunities for skills development that will translate to real-world careers.”

The bills, recommended by the MMA-supported Michigan Career Pathway Alliance Initiative, also require schools, as part of their school improvement plan, to provide robust career exploration and connections opportunities for students during grades K-12.

The Senate Economic Development and International Investment Committee will be holding a hearing on SBs 684-685 on 12/7/17.
