Manufacturers and Bipartisan Workgroup Present Comprehensive Solution to Unemployment Fraud

The bills, to be formally introduced later in the day, will combat critical issues which have affected Michigan’s unemployment system in recent years, including identity theft that has plagued the system with imposter claims and the incorrect determination of fraud toward innocent individuals.

“Employers have been bombarded with an explosion of imposter claims in the last three years,” says Delaney McKinley, MMA senior director of government affairs and membership, and MMA’s representative on the Workgroup. “While employers struggle to help employees who have fallen victim to this scam and ensure their company’s account is not charged for the fraudulent benefits, more action is needed to correct the problem.”

The bi-partisan legislation would strengthen identity verification processes to prevent imposter claims and establish a clear and communicative process for employers and affected individuals to report imposter claims. The bills also take a balanced approach to numerous concerns voiced by claimant advocates, including redefined fraud penalties, improved access to the free unemployment advocacy program, timely notice to claimants and incentives for repayment of overpayments.

“We commend Representative Graves and Representative Hertel for a balanced, solution-oriented approach to improving Michigan’s employer-financed unemployment system,” says McKinley.
